CERMAT2 Summer School 2017, May 15 - 19, 2017, Trento

CS1 "Career and Communication" (16hrs) This course will provide information and guidance to researchers on making long-term career plans and taking the next step in their careers as well as training in communication, a key skill in any career path.

CS2 "Exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights" (16hrs) This course will provide information and guidance to researchers on developing, implementing and enforcing intellectual property rights such as copyrights, patents, trademarks or licenses.

Venue

The CERMAT2 Summer School 2017 on Complementary Skills will take place at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento (via Mesiano, 77). The Department is located on a beautiful hill, 10 minutes far from Trento city center by taking bus N.5 at the train station.

Programme

CS1 - Careers and Communication (16hrs)
(Dr. Rudi Tranquillini)

The course will consist of three interlinked parts: crucial needed resources (people, money and networks), fundamental needed abilities (talking, writing and teaching), ideal personal profile (time, stress and aptitudes). There is a sequence of educational phases one must go through before becoming an independent researcher, and much to know about how to thrive at each stage. The course aims at revealing the set of unique values and behavioural norms that help researchers in their professional development. Furthermore, a careful look at what science can provide in terms of wide variety of career options, will also be explored. A description of the complexity and variety of activities in which a researcher is plunged will be also investigated. Handling a research carrier means managing relationships with people, handling time under pressure, writing papers, reports, abstracts and research proposals and many other documents changing styles and focus. Becoming researchers means to participate at conferences and workshops, make speeches and presentations, build up networks and actively plan activities, focus attention on results. Teaching activities and how to be effective in managing people and projects will also be tackled. Doing research means also learning from others and mentoring students, managing people and supervising them. It’s crucial to effectively use time and develop multitasking abilities. Writing effective thesis and abstracts, papers and proposals and good reports is fundamental in this kind of job. Giving talks and/or participating/organising successful conferences is also essential. Being a good researcher is not only having brilliant ideas but also developing a clear strategy on how to boost your own career. This course will present the most important skills needed to pursue a career in science and what is necessary for being successful and well-equipped future researchers.

Teacher Profile

Rudi Tranquillini. Rudi Tranquillini graduate at Bocconi University in Business Management and former Executive Officer at European Commission and Executive Director at University of Padua. Expert in research and innovation processes has been Institutional Development Advisor for the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and Grant Advisor for the University College of Dublin. Currently teaches Project Management and Proposal Writing at the doctoral school of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, at the doctoral school of Industrial Engineering, and the doctoral school of Information Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Trento.

Veronique Brohez. Veronique is a chemical engineer from the Faculte Polytechnique of Mons. She has been with the company VESUVIUS (ceramic materials for industrial use) for the last 25 years. She qualified as a Belgian and European Patent Attorney and then European Patent Litigator while working with Vesuvius. Veronique is in charge of the Corporate Intellectual Property department in Ghlin, Belgium. She manages a team of experts involved in preparing, obtaining and enforcing Intellectual Property rights. She dedicates a significant part of her time counselling the management of the firm about various issues in relation to Intellectual property. She is also a member of the Committee for the qualification of Belgian patent attorneys.
